Heartwarming Encounter at the US Open
In an endearing episode at the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka, the current world No. 1 and reigning champion, found herself captivated by a rescue dog named Wilson during Fan Week. This event takes place outside the main tournament and features various activities, including adopting dogs from local rescue organizations. Sabalenka shared her affection for Wilson via her Instagram, posting a photo with the pup and urging her followers to assist in convincing her team to let her adopt him.
Wilson’s New Home
However, in an unexpected turn of events, it was fellow tennis player Asia Muhammad who ultimately welcomed Wilson into her home. Muhammad, ranked No. 17 in doubles and a winner of 13 WTA Tour titles, made the joyous announcement on her social media, sharing several pictures of Wilson, who donned an official US Open credential. Her post read,
“New pup, who dis? Welcome home, Wilson.”
Community Support
The community of players rallied around this heartwarming story, with Shelby Rogers, who retired from competition after last season’s US Open, expressing her excitement with,
“Love this story! We love Wilson!!!”
Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula, who was set to face Sabalenka in the semifinals later that day, chimed in with,
“The most perfect boy!”
Inspiration from Friends
Asia Muhammad had learned about Wilson and other rescue dogs from a previous post by Desirae Krawczyk, another American doubles player. Krawczyk had shared images and videos of the dogs, leading Muhammad to take notice. Responding to Krawczyk’s congratulatory comment on her post, Muhammad acknowledged her friend, saying,
“All started from your post.”
A New Chapter
Just prior to adopting Wilson, Muhammad had reached the quarterfinals of the US Open doubles competition alongside her partner Demi Schuurs, though they were recently eliminated, allowing her the opportunity to bring Wilson home and start a new chapter together.
