Wheeling Nailers Make Playoff Progress with Intense OT Victory Over Reading Royals

Pittsburgh Penguins Season Recap

While the 2025-26 season ended unfavorably for the Pittsburgh Penguins after a first-round playoff exit against the Philadelphia Flyers, the future shines bright for their minor league affiliates.

Wheeling Nailers’ Playoff Success

In an exhilarating double-overtime matchup on Saturday, the Wheeling Nailers, the Penguins’ ECHL team, secured a spot in the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Reading Royals. The game concluded with forward Nolan Renwick finding the back of the net just over seven minutes into the second overtime, clinching the win against the Flyers’ affiliate team.

“Renwick’s decisive goal not only advanced the Nailers but also marked a significant moment for goaltender Taylor Gauthier, who made 41 saves during the contest, achieving his third shutout of the series.”

Gauthier, who acted as the emergency backup for the Penguins during the NHL playoffs, boasted an impressive .974 save percentage, tying an ECHL record for the fewest goals allowed in a five-game series. His performance established a new franchise record with three playoff shutouts overall.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, the Nailers will face the winner of the Maine Mariners and Adirondack Thunder matchup, with the North Division Final set to begin on May 8 in Wheeling. Despite their own playoff setback, the Penguins remain optimistic about their future, believing that their recent experiences will help them become strong contenders in the coming seasons.
