Amir Khan Boxing Academy Opens in Peterborough
In the heart of Peterborough, a newly established boxing gym aims to serve as a beacon of opportunity for local youth. Former world boxing champion Amir Khan inaugurated the Amir Khan Boxing Academy last Sunday, located within the bustling Queensgate Shopping Centre. His mission is to engage young people in the sport, steering them away from negative influences and towards the disciplined world of boxing.
Community Spirit in Yaxley
On a different note, community spirit shone brightly in Yaxley, near Peterborough, as a 12-year-old boy named Ben took it upon himself to combat litter in his village. Fed up with the unsightly garbage he encountered during dog walks, Ben has dedicated himself to cleaning up the area every week, filling black bin bags with rubbish to restore the beauty of his beloved village.
Inspiration Through Adversity
Tragedy also inspired a local nurse, Asher Cooper, to take on a monumental challenge. After her father fell severely ill and required intensive care, Asher found solace and purpose in running. Just under a year into her running journey, she completed a grueling 50km (approximately 31 miles) ultramarathon along the Boudicca Way in Norwich. Her efforts not only tested her endurance but also raised funds for ICU Steps, a charity that supports families and patients affected by critical conditions.
Art and Legacy
Art in the community has found a new expression with the unveiling of a mural honoring a beloved local figure, Walter Cornelius. The Latvian-born strongman and lifeguard, known for his whimsical feats, such as walking a mile while pushing a pea with his nose, now has his legacy immortalized on the exterior of a building on Wentworth Street, thanks to local artist Nathan Murdoch.
Challenges in Care
However, the week was not without its challenges as the Care Quality Commission (CQC) released troubling findings following an inspection at St Margarets Care Home. Rated inadequate, the inspection revealed issues regarding the safety and dignity of residents, highlighting the need for immediate improvements in care practices.
Political Developments and Community Initiatives
In a political twist, MPs from Cambridgeshire are advocating for a new structure for local government, promoting an initiative that includes the establishment of a “Greater Peterborough” authority alongside proposed divisions for Cambridge and Mid Cambridgeshire. This comes as a response to original plans for two broad new unitary authorities, aiming to preserve the distinct qualities of the area. In positive news, the popular Tiger pass scheme, which offers young individuals discounted bus fares, will continue through March 2026, encouraging even more travel for under-25s across the region.
