Washington Capitals Unveil Revamped Third Jersey
The Washington Capitals have launched a revamped third jersey that pays homage to various significant periods in the team’s history. Set to make its initial appearance on October 17 against the Minnesota Wild, this jersey will be sported during 15 home games in the current NHL season and will continue for a minimum of three more years.
Design Features
At the heart of this new design is its standout red base, a color choice that has represented the franchise for many years. The white shoulder yoke takes inspiration from the team’s looks in the 1970s and 1980s, while the shoulder patch features the iconic Capitol Dome logo from the 1990s. Notably, the primary emblem on the jersey is the well-known “Screaming Eagle” logo, which was prominently used between 1995 and 2007 — a period that coincided with superstar Alex Ovechkin‘s entry into the NHL. Ovechkin expressed his nostalgia for the new design, telling ESPN,
“It reminds me of my first year. Good days. They look cool. I hope fans are going to love it.”
Local Significance and Community Engagement
In recent years, the “Screaming Eagle” logo has seen a revival; it was first reintroduced on the team’s 2021 Reverse Retro jerseys, marking its debut on a red base. The logo later inspired the 2022 versions, available in a different color palette of black, blue, and copper.
The new third jersey kit is also embedded with local significance. As part of a thoughtful touch for fans, the three stripes on the sleeves symbolize the D.M.V. region, representing Washington D.C. and its neighboring states of Maryland and Virginia. Additionally, a District of Columbia flag label is featured at the back hem of the jersey.
Promotional Events
To promote this new look, the Capitals have organized a series of events. Notably, a bald eagle statue located by the Bird House at the National Zoo will be dressed in the third jersey. Furthermore, players from the Washington Nationals will wear “Screaming Eagle” shirts during their pregame warm-up sessions preceding a game against the Atlanta Braves. Dylan Strome, the Capitals center, is expected to don the new jersey while throwing the ceremonial first pitch for that event.
Fans can purchase the jerseys beginning October 17, coinciding with their official debut on the ice.
