Warren Foegele Thrives After Departure from Los Angeles Kings, Boosting Ottawa Senators’ Playoff Hopes

NHL Trade Deadline Overview

The NHL trade deadline has come and gone, and the Los Angeles Kings have been active in reshaping their roster. Among the changes, the team decided to part ways with right winger Corey Perry and acquired center Scott Laughton, while also making a significant move involving left winger Warren Foegele. In a deal with the Ottawa Senators, the Kings sent Foegele along with a conditional 2026 third-round draft pick in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick and a third-rounder in the same year.

Warren Foegele’s Impact in Ottawa

Since arriving in Ottawa, Foegele has been a standout performer. The 29-year-old forward from Markham, Ontario, appeared in nine games for the Senators and has already made his presence felt on the ice, scoring five goals and tallying six points. He began this productive stint with a goal in his debut against the Seattle Kraken on March 7, followed by an impressive multi-point game where he netted a goal and provided an assist against the San Jose Sharks in just his fifth outing as a Senator. Currently, Foegele is enjoying a scoring streak, having found the back of the net in three consecutive games, making him a pivotal player in Ottawa’s campaign as they strive for a postseason berth, currently sitting just two points shy of a wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trade Benefits and Player Performance

The Kings’ decision to trade Foegele has proven beneficial for both parties. The Senators have been on a 7-2-0 run since acquiring him, suggesting that the transaction was advantageous for General Manager Steve Staios. It’s noteworthy that Foegele’s recent contributions come despite playing just 11:31 minutes on average, the lowest during his nine-season tenure in the NHL. In contrast, during his time with the Kings, he played 47 games, scoring only seven goals and accumulating nine points—numbers he has almost equaled in just a short time with Ottawa.

Challenges Faced by Foegele

Foegele’s decline in performance while with the Kings raised eyebrows, especially after he set personal records the previous season with 24 goals, 22 assists, and a significant plus-36 rating. Injuries and periodic healthy scratches hindered his ability to find consistency, prompting Kings GM Ken Holland to seek a trade as the team had an excess of forwards. With Kevin Fiala and Andrei Kuzmenko currently sidelined, Foegele’s skills may once again be in high demand, highlighting the sometimes unpredictable nature of player performance in the NHL.
