Miami RedHawks’ Perfect Season and MAC Tournament Challenge
Despite finishing the regular season without a single defeat, boasting a perfect 31-0 record, the Miami RedHawks faced an unexpected challenge in the MAC tournament, where they were eliminated in the first round by Massachusetts. This early exit raised concerns about their selection for the upcoming 2026 Men’s NCAA Tournament.
Selection Sunday and Matchup Details
However, on Selection Sunday, the RedHawks received the news they were hoping for; they will compete against Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the First Four rounds taking place in Dayton, Ohio. A victory here would set them up for a difficult matchup against the sixth-seeded Tennessee in the first official round of the tournament.
NET Rankings and Committee Insights
Interestingly, Miami’s inclusion in the tournament field came despite their low standing in the NCAA’s NET Rankings, where they were placed at No. 64. They were placed ahead of teams such as Texas, SMU, and North Carolina State, although the NCAA selection committee, led by Keith Gill, acknowledged that those teams had better predictive metrics and higher quality victories compared to Miami.
“Miami came in before NC State, Texas and SMU. However, during our analysis, those teams performed better in terms of predictive metrics and quality of wins,”
Gill noted during the live selection show.
Analyst Reactions and Tournament Resume
Wally Szczerbiak, a former NBA player and Miami alum who now serves as an analyst for CBS Sports, expressed his astonishment over Miami’s placement in the First Four instead of a more direct entry into the NCAA bracket.
“I was very surprised to see Miami in the First Four,”
he stated.
“Being so close to campus, I expect they will have strong support from the crowd, which adds a significant advantage. They have much to prove after being placed in this round of the tournament.”
Miami’s tournament resume indicates a lack of challenging games, as they did not engage in any contests classified as Quad 1. They managed to secure three wins in Quad 2 matchups, and their only loss came from a Quad 4 game. Mackenzie Brooks, a bracketologist for CBS Sports, emphasized that Miami’s flawless record is what ultimately secured their spot in the tournament, yet their metrics warranted scrutiny.
“While their record has clearly propelled them into this position, it’s their performance metrics that are holding them back, suggesting they are not as strong as their win-loss record might imply,”
she pointed out.
Looking Ahead
As the RedHawks prepare for their encounter with SMU on March 17, they enter the contest as 8.5-point underdogs based on BetMGM’s betting lines. With skepticism surrounding their capability, Miami aims to defy the odds and showcase their potential in the tournament.
