Spring Super Teams on the SouthCoast

The excitement is building for the upcoming Spring Super Teams on the SouthCoast, but before celebrating our student-athletes, we need your involvement. This season, readers will have the crucial opportunity to help select our Players of the Year across all sports.

Voting Information

Continuing the tradition from our fall and winter voting, we are presenting you with a refined selection of top contenders—the challenge was not easy. Now is your chance to cast your vote for the High School Girls Tennis Player of the Year.

Reader input will contribute to 25% of the final results, while the remaining votes will be determined by Sports Editor Laurie Los Lee. Voting will close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, and the nominees are organized alphabetically by institution.

Nominees

Kohana Fontinha from Apponequet, a senior, has made her mark by playing at the No. 1 singles position. She concluded her remarkable high school tennis journey with a record of 60 wins against 18 losses and achieved South Coast Conference All-Star honors for the fourth consecutive year. Notably, her efforts aided the Lakers in reaching the MIAA Division 3 Sweet 16. Apponequet’s head coach Ken Lanyon praised her, stating, “Kohana is one of the best athletes I have ever coached, showing exceptional skill and leadership on and off the court.”

Katherine Johnson, a junior at Bishop Stang, demonstrated her prowess in the first singles slot, closing the season with an impressive 9-2 record that propelled the Spartans into the MIAA Div. 2 playoffs. Head coach Victoria Babcock spoke highly of Johnson, remarking, “Katherine is a premier athlete, whose hard work and tenacity stand out. Furthermore, she exemplifies humility and passion for tennis.”

Neva Matos of Old Rochester, also a junior, shone this season with an undefeated streak at first singles, which significantly contributed to securing the South Coast Conference championship for her team. In addition to winning the SCC Individual Tournament, she earned the title of conference MVP. Old Rochester coach Jim McGonigle commended her not only for her on-court achievements but also for her leadership and support of younger teammates, stating, “Neva’s influence extends beyond her matches; she sets a tremendous example through her dedication and encourages her teammates during competitions.”
