Vincent Kompany brushes off Manchester City speculation ahead of DFB Pokal clash

Vincent Kompany Addresses Manchester City Speculation

Vincent Kompany, the manager of Bayern Munich, has dismissed speculation regarding his potential future role at Manchester City. This response came during a press conference ahead of Bayern’s DFB Pokal match against Union Berlin. The rumors were sparked by remarks from Uli Hoeness, the former president of the club, who claimed that Pep Guardiola had indicated to Kompany that he would be his successor at City.

Kompany, who previously played for City, emphasized his respect for Hoeness but maintained that his current focus is solely on Bayern’s accomplishments.

Kompany stated, “I’ve often said, I’m not here to comment on Uli Hoeness’ statements. I have huge respect for him. But in football, I can’t think that far ahead; my attention is on Bayern and our present objectives. I prefer to engage fully with the current environment, as that occupies all my time. My thoughts regarding other clubs are non-existent; my view is entirely directed at FC Bayern.”

Bayern Munich’s Recent Performance

Although Bayern Munich has enjoyed a strong start this season, they encountered a few setbacks recently, including a draw against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga and a first loss to Arsenal in the Champions League. Despite these challenges, they still maintain a substantial eight-point lead in the Bundesliga standings after their Saturday victory over St. Pauli, where they won 3-1, thanks to late goals from Luis Díaz and Nicolas Jackson.

Kompany addressed the team’s recent difficulties, including a tendency to fall behind in matches. “We began the season by scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes, so a change in that form was to be expected. Falling behind is something we’ve recognized and are focused on improving. While I think this situation is normal for now, should it become a trend, we’ll need to address it. In general, we often led by three goals within the first 20 minutes in the last 20 games, which indicates our attacking capabilities.”

Goals for the DFB Pokal

The DFB Pokal has not seen Bayern clinch the trophy since 2020, and Kompany aims to change that trajectory. He expressed his aspirations for the team, stating, “By the end of the season, we’d like to feel this pressure again, but even more intensively. Our goal is to perform well and secure a win; we are ready for any challenge, be it a standard 90 minutes or an extended period. This anticipation is constructive pressure. One can always claim a desire to win everything, but that requires effort and a winning attitude. If we demonstrate our hunger for victory tomorrow, we stand a good chance.”

Kompany also noted that while Alphonso Davies remains sidelined due to a long-term injury, he expects the rest of his squad to be fit for the upcoming match against Union Berlin.
