Honoring David Greenwood
This Friday, Verbum Dei High School will honor the late David Greenwood by retiring his jersey during a halftime ceremony as the Eagles host Gardena Serra at 7 p.m. Greenwood, who passed away on June 8, 2022, at the age of 68 after a battle with cancer, is remembered not only for his impressive talents on the court but also for his contributions to the school’s basketball program that made a significant mark in the 1970s.
Legacy of a Standout Player
A standout player at Verbum Dei, Greenwood, along with teammate Roy Hamilton, transformed the Eagles into a formidable force in high school basketball. Following his successful teenage career, Greenwood earned All-American honors at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and went on to be selected as the second overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, following Magic Johnson, who was taken first by the Los Angeles Lakers.
NBA Career and Coaching Contributions
Greenwood enjoyed a fruitful 12-year career in the NBA, which included an NBA championship title with the Detroit Pistons. After his playing days, he returned to his roots, contributing to Verbum Dei as a coach, leading the team to state championships in both 1998 and 1999. His legacy continues to resonate with former players and students.
DeAnthony Langston, a Verbum Dei alumnus, reflected on Greenwood’s impact, stating, “David was a hero to me. He’s one of the all-time greats in Verbum Dei history.”
Celebrating Athletic History
The jersey retirement ceremony not only pays tribute to Greenwood’s lasting legacy but also highlights the rich athletic history of Verbum Dei, a school that has produced remarkable talent in the realm of high school sports. This event is part of ongoing efforts to celebrate and recognize the achievements of past athletes, fostering pride in the athletic program.
