Venus Williams Opens Up About Health Struggles
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, tennis legend Venus Williams recently opened up about a crucial surgery she underwent a year ago, shedding light on a personal health struggle that had plagued her for many years. After being sidelined for 16 months, the seven-time Grand Slam champion made a stunning comeback at the 2025 Citi Open in Washington, where she managed to secure a victory against Peyton Stearns before facing defeat at the hands of Magdalena Frech.
Health Challenges and Recovery
Returning to competition at the age of 45 is a feat in itself, especially for a player of her stature, whose presence on the WTA Tour remains significant. Williams’s recent health revelation adds an inspiring layer to her journey back to the sport she loves.
In her post, she disclosed that she had an open myomectomy to remove fibroids and a large focal adenomyoma, a condition embedded in her uterine muscle that had caused her significant pain. For years, Williams suffered from severe anemia and debilitating cramps alongside abnormal menstrual cycles, which not only affected her daily life but also hindered her performance on the tennis court.
“I was misdiagnosed for several years, leading to my untreated conditions. I was told that surgery was not an option and that I might face life-threatening complications, which ultimately discouraged my hopes of carrying my own children,” Williams explained. “It’s essential to stand up for your health and seek the right care.”
Inspiring Others
Motivated by her experience, Williams expressed hope that by sharing her story, she could prevent other women from undergoing similar struggles. She expressed gratitude towards her support team, who guided her through her recovery and helped raise awareness about her health issues, which are highly treatable.
“Now, I can play tennis in better health than ever, and it feels surreal! I want to thank my amazing medical team and my puppy Harold for being my companions during recovery,” she shared enthusiastically, as she sets her sights on the upcoming US Open.
Though it’s uncertain whether she will participate in singles or mixed doubles with Reilly Opelka at the Cincinnati Open, her return to the sport marks a triumphant moment in her career.
A Testament to Resilience
Venus Williams’s story resonates as a powerful testament to resilience and advocacy for women’s health, a message that continues to inspire her fans and the next generation of athletes.
