Vancouver Canucks in Talks to Acquire Ilya Safonov
The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly in discussions to bolster their roster with the addition of Ilya Safonov, a 25-year-old Russian center. Recently covered by Daria Tuboltseva of RG Media, Safonov stands at an impressive 6 feet 4 inches and weighs 205 pounds.
Safonov’s KHL Performance
He spent last season playing in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for Ak Bars Kazan, where he made significant contributions to his team. Tuboltseva provided insights regarding Safonov’s situation, indicating that he had previously agreed to terms with the Canucks under former management, but uncertainty lingered after a coaching shakeup.
Recent developments suggest that a contract agreement between Safonov and the Canucks is close, with expectations of a one-year entry-level deal being finalized soon.
Acquisition Details
The Canucks secured Safonov’s rights from the Chicago Blackhawks shortly after the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for future considerations. Chicago had selected him in the sixth round during the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
Over the course of his career in the KHL, Safonov has participated in 331 regular-season contests, amassing 128 points. In his most recent season, he recorded 16 goals and a total of 33 points across 68 games. His performance helped Ak Bars Kazan reach the KHL Finals, where they ultimately fell short to Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in a six-game series.
