Vancouver Canucks Defenseman Jett Woo Waived As He Prepares For Season Return

Vancouver Canucks Place Jett Woo on Waivers

On Monday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that defenseman Jett Woo was placed on waivers, according to insights shared by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. This procedural move indicates that Woo is set to kick off his 2025-26 campaign after a prolonged recovery from an upper-body surgery he underwent during the off-season.

Contract Details and Potential Impact

Now 25 years old, Woo is signed to a one-year, two-way contract that pays him $775,000 in the NHL and $290,000 in the AHL. This could make him an attractive option for teams in need of defensive reinforcements. If he goes unclaimed through waivers, the Canucks have the option to reassign him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.

Career Overview

Drafted 37th overall by the Canucks in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft, Woo has been part of the organization for eight years but has yet to make his NHL debut. His experience at the AHL level is considerable; he has played in 267 games over five seasons, netting 21 goals and 62 assists for a total of 83 points, alongside accumulating 332 penalty minutes and a plus-32 rating.

In the previous season while serving as an alternate captain in Abbotsford, he contributed two goals and 16 assists, totaling 18 points, while also tallying 90 penalty minutes and a plus-14 rating. Woo’s role in Abbotsford was pivotal during their recent Calder Cup run, where he recorded one goal and six points in 22 playoff games.

Current Team Dynamics

Notably, players who are injured cannot be placed on waivers nor bought out, although trades are still an option. However, given Abbotsford’s struggles this season—currently sitting at the bottom of the Pacific Division with a record of 5-15-4 and an alarming league-high of 93 goals allowed—Woo’s return could provide much-needed support.

The Vancouver Canucks’ NHL roster currently features right-side defense players such as Filip Hronek, Tyler Myers, and Tom Willander, the latter of whom recently scored his inaugural NHL goal.
