Vancouver Canucks: A Look at the Candidates in the Hunt for a New General Manager

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Search

The Vancouver Canucks are actively searching for a new General Manager after dismissing Patrik Allvin. A variety of candidates have emerged as potential successors, broadening the scope of the Canucks’ search.

Current Candidates

Early in this process, Jim Rutherford voiced support for Ryan Johnson, the current Assistant General Manager. Johnson has been part of the Canucks organization since the 2013-14 season, beginning his career as a Development Coach before transitioning to a management role with the AHL’s Utica Comets. His current position has progressed from a developmental director to Special Assistant to the GM, and now he serves as Assistant GM.

Another candidate being considered is Kevyn Adams, who most recently was with the Buffalo Sabres before his exit in December 2025. Adams’ extensive experience spans several years within the Sabres, starting from a Development Coach to GM, requiring the Canucks to seek permission for an interview as he remains under contract with Buffalo.

Ryan Bowness, known as the son of former Canucks coach Rick Bowness, is currently the Assistant General Manager for the New York Islanders. Since 2009, he has held various positions, including Team Manager for the Thrashers/Jets and Director of Pro Scouting for the Penguins, adding depth to his candidacy.

Shane Doan, a veteran NHL player with over two decades in the league and now a Special Assistant to the GM with the Toronto Maple Leafs, is another name to note. Vancouver has shown interest in interviewing him, as Doan brings a rich background in management and team consulting.

Bill Scott, Assistant GM of the Edmonton Oilers, is expected to have virtual interviews with the Canucks. Scott has a legacy with the Oilers since 2010, also taking on roles with their AHL affiliate teams.

Brett Peterson and Evan Gold have both gained traction as candidates. Peterson, contributing as an Assistant GM with the Florida Panthers, has also been involved with Team USA in the World Championships, while Gold, currently serving with the Boston Bruins as AGM and GM of their AHL affiliate, has his name in the mix as a finalist for a GM post with the Maple Leafs as well.

Other Notable Candidates

Other notable candidates include Brad Pascall from the Calgary Flames, known for his longstanding management role there, and Jeff Tambellini of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who is relatively new to the AGM title but has a background in coaching and scouting.

The pool of candidates remains fluid, with additional speculation around figures like Laurence Gilman and Marc Bergevin. Former players such as Markus Näslund and Roberto Luongo have also been mentioned among potential choices, despite recent reports indicating that names like Patrick Burke and Ryan Martin are no longer in consideration.
