Usyk’s Intent to Face Wilder
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has signaled his intent to take on Deontay Wilder as his forthcoming opponent, labeling the American as his “top choice” for an upcoming bout.
Usyk’s Recent Achievements
Usyk, who boasts an unbeaten record of 24 victories, including 15 by knockout, recently etched his name in boxing history at Wembley Stadium by defeating Daniel Dubois, becoming a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. Following this victory, he opted to release his WBO title, which subsequently allowed Fabio Wardley to claim the championship status.
Usyk’s Ambitions
In an interview with Boxing King Media, Usyk shared his ambitions for the fight, stating, “I consulted with my team and indicated that he is the first option I want to pursue.”
He emphasized the allure of facing Wilder, noting the American’s legacy as a powerful puncher and his previous reign as the WBC world champion.
“I aim to challenge Deontay Wilder. It seems like an intriguing matchup,” Usyk remarked, acknowledging Wilder’s recognition and strength, referring to him as one of the most prominent heavyweights of the past decade.
Wilder’s Recent Performance
Wilder, currently at a record of 44 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw with 43 knockouts, has faced challenges since his trilogy with Tyson Fury, including two consecutive TKO losses to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang. He made a brief comeback by winning against lesser-known contender Tyrrell Anthony Herndon, stopping him in the seventh round.
Even with Wilder’s recent struggles, Usyk perceives a clash with the heavyweight as an engaging and significant contest to undertake.
