Upset at Wimbledon: Ons Jabeur Out After Retiring Against Viktoriya Tomova in First Round

Wimbledon Championships: Ons Jabeur’s Early Exit

In a stunning turn of events at the Wimbledon Championships, celebrated Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur has bowed out in the first round, succumbing to injury against Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova. The match, held at the All England Club, marked a disappointing start for Jabeur, a two-time finalist who has yet to capture a Grand Slam title.

Match Highlights

During the match, Jabeur found herself behind in scores, trailing by a set and a break before notifying the umpire of her inability to continue. The contest initially showcased a competitive spirit, with both players exchanging breaks to establish a lively pace. Jabeur even managed to break Tomova’s serve, closing the gap to 2-3 in a lengthy exchange that lasted for 22 points.

However, following this break, she requested a medical timeout, visibly distressed as medical professionals attended to her court-side, checking her vital signs.

Upon resuming, Jabeur managed to push the first set into a tiebreak, momentarily leading at 5-4, but ultimately lost the set 7-5. Two games later, she opted to retire from the match, leading to a bitter end to her Wimbledon campaign.

Jabeur’s Wimbledon History

The 30-year-old has a rich history at Wimbledon, reaching the finals in both 2022 and 2023, but has struggled to clinch her first Grand Slam title. In her previous finals, she lost to Elena Rybakina in 2022 and to Markéta Vondroušová the following year — a loss Jabeur described as particularly heartbreaking.

Additionally, Jabeur reached the final of the U.S. Open in 2022, where she was defeated by Iga Świątek. However, her 2025 season has been marred by physical setbacks; she faced an early exit in the 2025 French Open and was unable to replicate her competitive form from previous years, with her deepest run this season being a quarterfinal showing in Doha.

Persistent injuries, including a shoulder problem that curtailed her 2024 season and a leg strain incurred during the Miami Open, have hindered her performance.

Looking Ahead

With Jabeur’s early exit, Tomova is set to advance to the second round, where she will compete against either Briton Sonay Kartal or the 20th seed, Jelena Ostapenko.
