Northeast Conference Tournament Update
The Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament may still be ongoing, but it has already identified its representative for the NCAA Tournament. Long Island University has secured a spot in the 2026 March Madness after emerging victorious against Wagner in the NEC semifinals held on Saturday, March 7. Even with the tournament title yet to be claimed, the Sharks, having clinched the top position during the regular season, will compete in the championship game knowing they’ve already punched their ticket to the tournament.
Championship Matchup
In a noteworthy matchup, Long Island will face Mercyhurst for the NEC championship; however, Mercyhurst’s participation in the NCAA Tournament is off the table. After defeating Stonehill to advance to the title game, Mercyhurst has inadvertently solidified Long Island’s automatic bid.
Eligibility Issues
The reason Mercyhurst will not be competing in March Madness revolves around its ongoing transition from Division II to Division I, which officially began in July 2024. NCAA regulations stipulate a four-year waiting period before a newly transitioned team can participate in the NCAA Tournament, meaning the Lakers won’t be eligible until the 2027-2028 season.
Another NEC team facing similar circumstances is Le Moyne College, which transitioned to Division I in July 2023. The Dolphins will also have to wait until the 2026-2027 season to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Future Prospects
There was a potential situation where both Mercyhurst and Le Moyne could have reached the NEC championship, leading to a possible game between the two losing semifinalists to decide who would earn the automatic bid. However, with the current scenario, Long Island’s path to March Madness is clear as they aim to solidify their status by claiming the conference title in the championship game scheduled for Tuesday, March 10.
