Ulises Davila, Ex-Macarthur FC Captain, Confesses to Leading A-League Betting Corruption Scheme

Ulises Davila’s Involvement in Card-Fixing Scheme

Ulises Davila, a 34-year-old former captain of Macarthur FC and Mexican youth international, has confessed to his involvement in a significant card-fixing scheme that manipulated betting outcomes within the A-League Men. Known for his recognition as the league’s Player of the Year in 2021, Davila now faces serious legal repercussions as he stands accused of orchestrating a conspiracy involving his teammates to purposefully incur yellow cards in six different matches during the 2023-24 season of the A-League.

Legal Proceedings

Appearing in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, Davila entered a guilty plea on charges related to his participation in activities that interfere with the integrity of sporting events. Initially, he faced eight charges, including leading a criminal group, but these were dropped by prosecutors. His sentencing is scheduled for December 19.

Details of the Scheme

The controversy escalated during a match on December 9, 2023, where Davila and his fellow players, Clayton Lewis and Kearyn Baccus, were shown yellow cards under dubious circumstances. Davila received his caution for making the game unnecessarily sluggish by kicking the ball away, while Lewis was penalized for an aggressive push and Baccus for a rough tackle. This particular game saw betting placed on Macarthur accruing a minimum of four yellow cards, an arrangement facilitated by Davila. Winning bets from this arrangement reportedly exceeded $200,000, with Davila allegedly paying each of his teammates $10,000 for their involvement.

Consequences for Teammates

While Lewis and Baccus managed to avoid a conviction after being placed on good-behaviour bonds and acknowledged they acted under Davila’s direction, they expressed that he was not only the team’s leader but was also at the helm of this illegal scheme. Following their arrests, all three players received suspensions from Macarthur FC, and they are no longer associated with the club.

Macarthur FC’s Response

Macarthur FC has released a statement emphasizing the need for improved integrity measures in Australian football, citing a lack of adequate protections and responsiveness regarding such serious issues. The statement called for an urgent review and overhaul of the integrity protocols within the sport to prevent future occurrences.

Davila’s Football Journey

Davila’s journey in football began with promise, having showcased his talent at the Under-20 World Cup before signing with Chelsea at the age of 20. Despite not making it to the first team, he continued his career in various leagues before joining the A-League in 2019 with Wellington Phoenix. His performance in the 2020-21 season earned him the esteemed Johnny Warren Medal, and he captained Macarthur FC after transferring to the team. Tragically, in 2022, Davila suffered the loss of his wife Lily Pacheco, who passed away suddenly at age 31, leaving behind their two-year-old son.
