UConn’s Dan Hurley Reflects on Disheartening Loss, Celebrates Team’s Triumph Over Xavier

UConn’s Strong Victory and Reflections

Following a strong victory over Xavier in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, UConn’s head coach, Dan Hurley, reflected on the team’s recent disappointing regular-season finale. The sixth-ranked Huskies triumphed over Xavier with a decisive score of 93-68, but Hurley couldn’t shake off the sting of their previous defeat—a 68-62 setback to Marquette that had a profound impact on the team’s morale.

“It felt great to return to the court after what I would call a choke job over the weekend,” Hurley commented, still grappling with the implications of the loss and his subsequent ejection in the game’s final moments, which resulted in a $25,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.

In a light-hearted moment, he disclosed that several of his players jokingly offered to chip in to help cover the fines, with some even raising hands to pledge $1,000 or $500. “Of course, I can’t accept that, as it would be illegal,” he added with a chuckle as he wrapped up the postgame conference.

Team’s Resilience and Future Aspirations

After the loss at Marquette, Hurley and his squad endured a tough film session that he described as “brutal,” which left the players feeling uneasy but also enlightened. Hurley expressed that the team has shown remarkable talent throughout the season, even noting their record of 28 wins against strong opponents, including ranked teams likely vying for top seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

“We haven’t won a championship yet, nor reached the Final Four, but we need to remember who we are,” Hurley emphasized.

He highlighted their impressive victories and urged his players not to dwell on just one disappointing performance. Solo Ball, who led UConn in their victory with 19 points, echoed Hurley’s sentiment, stating,

“There’s no difference between sad Dan or angry Dan.”

Tarris Reed Jr. contributed significantly in the win with 17 points and 14 rebounds, referring to the film session as uncomfortable yet necessary.

“You’re not used to it, but we all understood the importance of moving on from the loss to Marquette,” Reed remarked.

Despite the setbacks, UConn’s season continues with aspirations for further success in the tournament ahead, as they work to solidify their identity as a formidable contender.
