UConn Women’s Basketball Continues Flawless Record
In a commanding performance that maintained their flawless record, the top-ranked UConn women’s basketball team defeated Marquette 71-56 on Saturday in Milwaukee. The win marked UConn’s impressive 43rd consecutive victory, which includes a perfect 16-0 record in the Big East this season, and hasn’t seen the team succumb to defeat since their loss to Tennessee more than a year ago.
Standout Performances
Azzi Fudd emerged as a standout with 25 points, while Sarah Strong displayed a remarkable turnaround by scoring 19 of her total 22 points in the game’s second half. Despite their efforts, Marquette faced a setback, marking their third consecutive loss for the first time since December 2022.
Game Highlights
The match began with Marquette taking an initial lead at 5-0, courtesy of Jaidynn Mason’s quick baskets. However, UConn quickly responded with eight straight points and established control over the game. A brief resurgence by Marquette, highlighted by a three-point play from Skylar Forbes that equalized the score at 20, was quickly extinguished as UConn reeled off 11 unanswered points to take the lead into halftime at 36-24.
Strong’s scoring drought in the first half was unexpected, especially given her 60% shooting average before the game. Nonetheless, she rebounded dramatically in the third quarter, where her offensive output totaled 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting. KK Arnold also contributed, achieving a career-high nine assists along with her 10 points, all amid her homecoming after an illustrious high school career in Wisconsin.
Marquette’s Efforts
Marquette’s attempt to close the gap included contributions from Lee Volker, who scored 15, and Forbes, who added 14 points. Nonetheless, UConn’s dominance remained evident, sealing their victory methodically.
Looking Ahead
Looking forward, the Huskies will head to Villanova for their next matchup on Wednesday, while Marquette will have an extended break before visiting the same opponents on February 22.
