UConn Triumphs Over Villanova
Villanova, Pennsylvania – In a thrilling encounter on Wednesday night, No. 1 UConn showcased their resilience, overcoming a halftime deficit to secure an 83-69 victory against Villanova. Azzi Fudd was instrumental in this comeback, scoring an impressive 25 points, while teammate Sarah Strong contributed significantly with 21 points, despite facing foul trouble earlier in the match.
This win marks UConn’s 44th consecutive triumph, a streak that extends back to their last loss—a narrow 80-76 defeat at Tennessee on February 6, 2022. The Huskies have also dominated the Big East, now boasting a remarkable 64-game winning streak against conference rivals, which includes both regular season and tournament play.
Villanova’s Strong Performance
Villanova, now with a record of 21-6 (14-4 Big East), put up a commendable fight, led notably by sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe, who scored 26 points. Denae Carter also played a crucial role for the Wildcats, adding 21 points to their tally. This defeat snapped Villanova’s six-game winning streak, keeping them firmly in second place in the conference standings.
In a small victory during the game, Villanova became the first team this season to lead UConn at halftime, ending the first half with a score of 40-37.
Second Half Comeback
UConn came out strong after halftime, quickly scoring the first seven points of the third quarter. They managed to create a lead of 51-44 early in the period, but Strong’s back-to-back fouls saw her temporarily sidelined with four personal fouls. Despite this setback, the Huskies maintained their momentum through Fudd and Ashlynn Shade, who contributed 13 points.
With eight seconds remaining in the quarter, Fudd scored, pushing their advantage to 11 points. As the final period approached, Strong returned and went on a scoring spree, netting nine consecutive points, solidifying UConn’s lead at 74-55.
