UConn Dominates Xavier 93-68 to Advance in Big East Tournament Quarterfinals

UConn Basketball Dominates in Big East Tournament

The University of Connecticut’s basketball team, ranked sixth nationally, delivered a commanding performance in their Big East Tournament quarterfinal by defeating Xavier 93-68 on Thursday night. This victory came as a necessary comeback following a disappointing loss to Marquette just days earlier, which cost them a chance for a share of the Big East regular-season title and potentially jeopardized their bid for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Key Performers

Tarris Reed Jr. was instrumental in the win, contributing a substantial double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. His efforts bolstered the Huskies’ dominance, which saw them leading by as much as 22 points during the first half. Despite a brief resurgence from the Musketeers, who managed to narrow the gap to 13 early in the second half, UConn quickly reasserted control. A timely three-pointer by Solo Ball with just over five minutes left effectively sealed the game, extending the lead to 25 points.

UConn, now boasting a 28-4 record for the season, displayed superior offensive and defensive prowess, outpacing Xavier in rebounds (40-28) and points scored in the paint (42-16). The team shot an impressive 57% from the field. Alongside Reed, Ball led the scoring with 19 points, and Alex Karaban added 15, contributing to a robust team effort.

Xavier’s Struggles

The Musketeers, who came into the game as the 10th seed after defeating No. 7 seed Marquette in a tightly contested first-round match, struggled against UConn’s well-rounded skill set, with leading scorer Filip Borovicanin tallying 22 points for Xavier.

Looking Ahead

Coach Dan Hurley, who was visibly engaged throughout the game, avoided the ejection that marred his previous game against Marquette.

With this win under their belt, UConn is set to face either No. 3 seed Villanova or 11th-seeded Georgetown in the semifinals. The top-seeded St. John’s, currently ranked 13th, will take on No. 4 seed Seton Hall in the other semifinal matchup at Madison Square Garden.

UConn has already triumphed over both potential semifinal teams this season, defeating Villanova twice and Georgetown on two occasions, solidifying their status as one of the favorites to advance further in the tournament and enhance their NCAA Tournament seeding.
