UCLA Triumphs Over Michigan State in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals
In a gripping clash during the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, UCLA overcame No. 8 Michigan State 88-84, demonstrating resilience amid adversity. Key performances came from Donovan Dent, who netted 23 points and distributed 12 assists, and Trent Perry, who contributed 22 points. The victory was especially noteworthy as UCLA lost their star player Tyler Bilodeau to an unfortunate leg injury late in the first half.
Bilodeau’s Injury
Bilodeau, who had been instrumental for the Bruins, was injured while attempting to defend against Carson Cooper. His knee buckled without contact, forcing him to leave the game and ultimately watch from the sidelines with the knee wrapped. Prior to his injury, Bilodeau managed to score five points in just 10 minutes on the court.
Game Highlights
UCLA had built a comfortable 15-point lead early in the second half, but the Spartans battled back, making the final stretch particularly tense. With just 25 seconds left, the Bruins were clinging to an 82-80 lead when Brandon Williams executed a fast-break layup that expanded the gap to four points. Although Michigan State’s Carson Cooper shaved points off the deficit with a layup of his own soon after, Perry responded decisively by hitting two free throws.
As the clock wound down, Jeremy Fears Jr. drove to the basket to narrow the score to 86-84, but Perry’s clutch free throws sealed the victory for UCLA.
Fears shone for the Spartans, finishing with 21 points and 13 assists, while both Cooper and Kur Teng contributed 13 points each to their team’s total.
Looking Ahead
This win not only propels the Bruins forward in the tournament but also sets up a challenging semifinal match against No. 18 Purdue, who defeated No. 11 Nebraska 74-58. Earlier in the season, UCLA had edged out Purdue 69-67, where Bilodeau proved his worth by sinking a pivotal three-pointer in the dying seconds.
As the tournament unfolds, UCLA will look to build on this momentum, even as they face the uncertainty of Bilodeau’s condition moving forward.
