UCLA Disrupts UConn’s Reign

In a significant shift within the latest Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25, second-ranked UCLA has garnered three first-place votes, disrupting UConn’s eight-week reign as the unanimous number one team. This change comes on the heels of UCLA’s impressive 51-point victory over then-ninth-ranked Iowa in the Big Ten championship, allowing them to leapfrog ahead in the rankings. Despite the loss, Iowa still climbed to seventh place.

Top Rankings Overview

Texas, showcasing their prowess by defeating South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference Tournament finals, has risen to third place, overtaking the Gamecocks. Meanwhile, in the rankings, LSU has edged up to fifth, contrasting with Vanderbilt’s fall to sixth. Duke made a noteworthy jump, ascending five positions to eighth after a thrilling overtime win against then twelfth-ranked Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference title match. Michigan and Oklahoma round out the top ten as ninth and tenth, respectively.

Notable Returns and Conference Representation

In a noteworthy return to the poll, Notre Dame rejoined the Top 25 at position 22, buoyed by reaching the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. The Fighting Irish replaced Fairfield, which had made its debut last week after advancing to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference finals.

Currently, the Southeastern Conference leads the way with the most representatives in the Top 25, boasting eight teams. The Big Ten follows with seven, while the Big 12 and ACC each feature four teams. Additionally, the Ivy League and Big East secure one spot each.

Looking Ahead

Looking ahead, the only other team from the Top 25 in action this week, apart from UConn, is Princeton. The Tigers are set to compete against Brown in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals on Friday, with the potential to face either Harvard or Columbia if they secure a win. Princeton has been challenged this season, having suffered two of their three losses at the hands of Columbia.

As anticipation builds for the NCAA Tournament bracket, expected to be unveiled Sunday night, both UCLA and UConn are anticipated to be frontrunners.
