UCLA Bruins Triumph Over USC Trojans
In a commanding performance, the UCLA Bruins triumphed over their crosstown rivals, the Southern California Trojans, with a score of 89-68 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Saturday. This victory not only marked a significant win for the Bruins but also set a new record for the highest point total they have ever achieved at this venue.
Key Performers
Donovan Dent led the charge for UCLA, contributing an impressive 25 points on 11-of-15 shooting, along with seven assists. His stellar play continued into the second half when he, alongside Eric Dailey Jr., helped the Bruins surge ahead by scoring the first 15 points after the break. Dent later extended the lead with five consecutive points, pushing the score to 72-47.
UCLA finished the second half with an impressive shooting percentage of 59%. Dailey also had a notable performance, finishing the game with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Tyler Bilodeau added 16 points and eight rebounds to the scoreboard.
USC’s Struggles
It was a stark contrast for USC, who struggled throughout, particularly after a dominating 24-9 run by the Bruins towards the end of the first period, leaving the Trojans trailing 45-30 at halftime.
This matchup was the second encounter in 11 days, and the Bruins have now bested USC in eight out of their last ten meetings, claiming victory in the last three road games. Remarkably, it was UCLA’s first win against USC by a margin of over 20 points since 1974, further establishing their dominance in this long-standing rivalry.
USC’s Season Challenges
On the other hand, the Trojans, with a season record of 18-13, suffered their seventh consecutive loss after starting strong with an 8-0 record at the start of the season. Despite a noteworthy 20-point effort from Alijah Arenas and a double-double from Ezra Ausar, who scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, USC’s performance was hindered by the absence of their top two scorers, Rodney Rice and Chad Baker-Mazara.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, both teams are set to participate in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago starting Tuesday. UCLA, holding a record of 21-10 and 13-7 in the Big Ten, enters the tournament with momentum, having secured four wins in their last five games, along with notable victories over teams such as Purdue, Illinois, and Nebraska. However, they also faced challenges with losses against top league contenders like Michigan and Michigan State, as well as ranked opponents including Arizona and Gonzaga.
