Introduction
Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, two of the brightest talents in women’s basketball, are set to join forces on the United States women’s national team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Puerto Rico next month. As the team prepares for competition, it features a blend of experienced veterans and promising newcomers, announcing a total of 12 players. Their partnership on the court is particularly notable following their standout performance in the 2023 NCAA championship game, which was clinched by LSU.
Team Roster
The roster also boasts several key figures who played pivotal roles in the U.S. team’s success at the Tokyo 2024 Olympics, including Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young. Additionally, Dearica Hamby and Rhyne Howard, who secured a bronze medal in 3×3 basketball during the 2024 Paris Games, are part of the squad. Notably, this lineup introduces newcomers Paige Bueckers, Sonia Citron, and Kiki Iriafen to the national stage. Completing the roster is Aliyah Boston, who previously represented the USA during Olympic qualifying.
Player Readiness
Despite a challenging season impacted by injuries, Clark expressed confidence in her readiness after attending a USA basketball camp in December. Meanwhile, celebrated three-time Olympic gold medalist Breanna Stewart is set to train with the team but will not participate in the tournament.
Coaching Staff
Leading the team in San Juan will be U.S. Olympic coach Kara Lawson, who will also juggle commitments as she returns to Duke University to prepare for the NCAA Tournament. Supporting her as assistant coaches are Natalie Nakase, Nate Tibbets, and Stephanie White, all of whom contributed during the training camp in December.
Upcoming Competitions
As they head into the tournament, the U.S. women’s team is slated to compete against Senegal, Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain. The American squad has already secured its place in the upcoming World Cup in Berlin, scheduled to take place from September 4 to 13, as they chase their fifth consecutive World Cup title.
