Turkish Football Federation Takes Action Against Corruption
In a significant move to combat corruption in Turkish football, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has imposed temporary suspensions on 102 players following an extensive investigation into betting misconduct. This decision, made public on Thursday, includes a mix of 25 players from the top-tier Super Lig and 77 players from the second division, facing suspensions ranging from 45 days to an entire year.
Key Players Affected
Among those impacted is Eren Elmali, a defender for Galatasaray and the Turkish national team, who was handed a 45-day suspension. His teammate Metehan Baltaci, who plays as a center back for Turkey’s Under-21 squad, received a nine-month penalty. Notably, Elmali admitted to placing bets on a football match approximately five years ago, clarifying that the game did not involve Galatasaray.
Wider Investigation and Impact
The investigation is extensive, affecting over 1,000 players who have been referred to the federation’s Professional Football Disciplinary Board. In an effort to manage the growing scandal, the TFF has also temporarily suspended play in the third and fourth tiers of Turkish football for a two-week period. However, the Super Lig, currently led by the reigning champions Galatasaray, along with the second division, will continue their matches uninterrupted.
Commitment to Integrity
Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu, the president of the federation, emphasized the commitment to purging the sport from various forms of corruption.
“We took office 16 months ago with promises to elevate Turkish football to the standard it rightfully deserves,”
he stated, reiterating that the federation will not sway from its mission to safeguard the integrity of the sport against any form of unethical practices and decay.
