Emerging Goaltending Talents in Detroit
The Detroit Red Wings are currently nurturing two highly regarded goaltending talents within their ranks, both of whom are poised for potential advancement to make a significant impact in the NHL. Sebastian Cossa, selected 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, and Trey Augustine, who was picked 41st in the 2023 NHL Draft, are honing their skills with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate. The prospect of these young athletes stepping up as reliable defenders of the net has fans buzzing with anticipation.
Trey Augustine’s Journey
Augustine, raised in South Lyon—a suburb of Detroit—has roots firmly planted in the region. His hockey journey took him through the U.S. National Team Development Program before he played collegiate hockey at Michigan State University. Having just completed his college tenure, he has signed with the Griffins on an amateur tryout basis. For Augustine, the opportunity to don the Red Wings jersey is a dream come true, as he reminisced about his formative years spent cheering for the team at Joe Louis Arena alongside his father.
“Growing up as a Red Wings fan, seeing legends like Jimmy Howard and Pavel Datsyuk up close has been a huge influence on me. Wearing the Winged Wheel one day would be incredible,” he shared in an interview with WILX reporter Ben Shockley.
Achievements and Recognition
During his time with the Spartans, Augustine not only earned accolades but also made history by winning the Mike Richter Award, acknowledging him as the top goaltender in college hockey. He achieved back-to-back First Team All-American honors and was recognized as Big Ten Goaltender of the Year on two occasions, culminating in his nomination as a Top Ten Finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award in 2026.
Transition to Professional Play
As he transitions to professional play, Augustine has been adapting to the demands of the game, expressing enthusiasm for the experiences he is gaining.
“So far, it’s been a great adjustment. Of course, it’s a shift from Michigan State, but I’m excited to get on the ice as we push towards the end of the season,” he stated, noting the supportive atmosphere among his new teammates.
Looking Ahead
In the context of the upcoming playoffs, the Grand Rapids Griffins have revealed their schedule for their matchup against the Manitoba Moose, underscoring their successful season in the AHL. Currently, Augustine sits behind Cossa and Michal Postava in the goaltending lineup. Manifesting a competitive spirit, he admits a desire for more playing time, yet remains committed to supporting his fellow goalies.
“While I want to get into every possible game, I recognize the team has two excellent goaltenders. To win the Calder Cup, I’ll do whatever is needed to prepare myself and the others, and support those who take the net,” Augustine explained resolutely.
