Trent McDuffie on Edge of Historic Deal to Become NFL’s Top-Paid Cornerback with Rams

Los Angeles Rams Finalizing Contract Extension with Trent McDuffie

In a significant move, the Los Angeles Rams are reportedly finalizing a contract extension with cornerback Trent McDuffie that would establish him as the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history. According to an anonymous source familiar with the advancing negotiations, the deal is expected to be a four-year, $124 million extension that guarantees $100 million.

While the Rams have yet to publicly announce McDuffie’s acquisition from the Kansas City Chiefs— a transaction that occurred last Wednesday involving several draft picks— ESPN was among the first to break the news of the lucrative extension.

Contract Details and Impact

Currently in the final year of his rookie deal worth $13.6 million, McDuffie, who is originally from the Los Angeles area, would remain with the Rams until 2030 due to the new agreement. The franchise is poised to reclaim the distinction of having the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, a title previously held by Jalen Ramsey, who signed a five-year extension worth $105 million in 2020.

The Rams, having narrowly missed the Super Bowl last season, are making focused efforts to shore up their defensive weaknesses by bringing in one of the league’s premier cornerbacks and making a substantial financial investment in him. With a favorable salary cap situation following a season where their defense was one of the least expensive in the league, the organization has room to maneuver.

Defensive Transformation

Last season, the Rams’ defense, which faltered during the regular season and playoffs, is expected to undergo a transformation with McDuffie at its core. The team has also extended contracts for safeties Quentin Lake and Kam Curl, while more defensive backs are anticipated to join the unit alongside expected returnees Emmanuel Forbes and Kamren Kinchens.

McDuffie’s Performance and Background

In his four NFL seasons, McDuffie has demonstrated his prowess as both a cover corner and a formidable tackler, notching three interceptions, 5.5 sacks, leading cornerbacks with 34 quarterback pressures, and forcing eight fumbles. His accolades include a first-team All-Pro selection in 2023 and a second-team All-Pro honor in 2024.

Upon acquiring McDuffie, the Rams surrendered their 29th overall pick in the upcoming draft, while still retaining the 13th overall pick from a prior trade with Atlanta, as well as additional fifth-round and sixth-round selections in this draft and a third-round pick next year. McDuffie, who has strong ties to the city, previously excelled as a high school athlete at St. John Bosco before playing his college ball at the University of Washington, where he was coached by current Rams defensive backs coach, Jimmy Lake.
