Trailblazing Premier League Referee Uriah Rennie Passes Away at 65

Uriah Rennie: A Trailblazer in Football

Uriah Rennie, who broke new ground as the Premier League’s inaugural Black referee, has passed away at the age of 65. Rennie, known for his significant contributions to English football, officiated over 300 matches in the top tier from 1997 until his retirement in 2008. Tragically, Rennie’s later years were marked by health struggles; he shared earlier this year that he was undergoing rehabilitation to regain mobility following a rare condition that resulted in paralysis from the waist down.

Pioneering Moment

Rennie’s pioneering moment came on April 5, 1997, when he officiated a match between Leeds United and Crystal Palace, marking a milestone in the sport’s history.

“We are immensely saddened by the news of Uriah’s passing,” stated the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Football Association, highlighting his role in dismantling barriers within the game. “He shaped the football community and served as an inspiration for future generations.”

Career Highlights

Beginning his refereeing career in 1979 at the age of 20, Rennie progressed through the Northern Premier League before gaining recognition in the Football League from 1994. In 2000, he was designated as a FIFA official, a role he held until mandatory retirement at age 45 in 2004. His final Premier League match took place on May 11, 2008, where he oversaw Liverpool’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Beyond the Pitch

Rennie’s influence extended beyond the pitch. He served as a magistrate in Sheffield since 1996 and was active in promoting equality and inclusion in sports, advocating for mental health awareness and addressing social deprivation. Born in Jamaica, he relocated to Sheffield during his childhood, growing up in the Wybourn neighborhood. Earlier this year, he was appointed Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University, a role he assumed just a month before his death in May 2025.

Legacy

His legacy remains profound, especially as it took until December 26, 2023, for another Black referee, Sam Allison, to officiate a top-flight match in England, underscoring the significant strides still needed in diversity within the sport.
