University of Washington Mourns the Loss of Mia Hamant
The University of Washington is mourning the loss of Mia Hamant, a talented goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team, who passed away at the age of 21 due to kidney cancer. Hamant, a standout player who played a pivotal role in leading the Huskies to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament during her junior year, was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer in April. Tragically, this diagnosis forced her to step away from the field to focus on chemotherapy treatment, effectively sidelining her for her senior season.
Legacy and Impact
Throughout her collegiate career, Mia showcased her skills as one of the premier goalkeepers in the Big Ten, boasting an impressive goals against average of 0.66 during the 2024 season, which ranks among the best in her program’s history. Her determination and spirit resonated beyond the pitch, earning her respect and admiration from teammates and coaches alike.
Nicole Van Dyke, the head coach for the women’s soccer team, reflected on Mia’s extraordinary presence, stating, “Mia was the heart of our program. Even through her toughest days, her joy, kindness, and courage lifted those around her. She inspired us all and made a lasting impact on the lives of her teammates and the entire UW community.”
Support for Hamant was prevalent across the Washington athletic department, including encouragement from fellow student-athlete Denzel Boston, a wide receiver for the Huskies football team. Following a game against Illinois on October 25, Boston highlighted the importance of rallying around Mia amidst her struggles with cancer, remarking, “We’re just trying to be there to support her.”
Recognition and Awards
Just weeks before her passing, Hamant attended a football game where she had the honor of sounding the siren at Husky Stadium. In recognition of her exemplary character, the Big Ten recently awarded her the 2025 Sportsmanship Award, a testament to her spirit and resilience.
In a statement regarding her untimely passing, athletic director Pat Chun expressed the profound grief felt by all, stating, “Mia embodied everything we hope for in a Husky student-athlete. Her remarkable courage and unwavering commitment to her community and team serve as an inspiration to all of us.”
Mia Hamant is remembered for her indomitable spirit and is survived by her loving parents. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on within the Husky Athletics community.
