The boxing community is mourning the untimely death of 21-year-old Mexican boxer Jesus Ivan Mercado Cabrera, whose tragic passing comes on the heels of the loss of legendary fighter Ricky Hatton. Mercado, affectionately known as ‘Rafaguita’, was discovered deceased on the morning of September 15 on the San Luis Caseja road close to the Mexico–U.S. border, tragically wrapped in a blanket and abandoned.

Authorities believe he was the victim of foul play, and an investigation has been launched to determine the details behind his death and identify those responsible. Originally from Nogales, Sonora, Mercado was poised to enter the ring for a match scheduled on September 27 in Hermosillo, an opportunity that now has been shattered along with his future.
Local media outlets reported that Mercado’s body was found during routine patrols, and images, which have not been published by World Boxing News due to their disturbing nature, suggest he was discarded in the desert.

Mercado embarked on his professional boxing career in 2021, accumulating a record of 7 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw, with 5 of those wins coming by knockout. His promising start of 6 consecutive victories took a downturn following a draw with Kevin Betancourt Barrera, leading to a struggle during which he won just once in his last ten fights.
