Guglielmo Vicario Exits Italy National Team
Guglielmo Vicario, the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, has exited the Italy national team camp due to undisclosed physical issues. This prompted coach Luciano Spalletti to name Marco Carnesecchi, currently with Atalanta, as his replacement.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Wednesday that Vicario, who had played a pivotal role in helping his club secure the UEFA Europa League title, will not participate in the upcoming qualifiers. He is expected to link back up with Tottenham for pre-season preparations.
Impact of Vicario’s Departure
This marks an unfortunate end to the season for Vicario and raises questions about his fitness heading into the training period. His absence paves the way for Carnesecchi, a 24-year-old keeper who has yet to earn a cap for Italy but last featured for the national squad during friendly matches in North America in March 2024 against Venezuela and Ecuador.
Looking Ahead: Italy’s World Cup Qualifiers
The newly named goalkeeper joins a squad already filled with talent, including Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain and Alex Meret of Napoli, as they prepare for World Cup qualifying matches against Norway and Moldova scheduled for June 6 and June 9 respectively.
As Spalletti reshuffles his lineup, the updated Italy roster now features a mix of experienced players and emerging talent as they look to consolidate their position in the qualifiers.
