Tottenham Hotspur’s Pursuit of Eberechi Eze
Tottenham Hotspur is optimistic about finalizing a transfer deal for Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, with financial negotiations estimated to be around £60 million ($81 million), according to insiders who spoke to ESPN. Previously, it was reported that Spurs were contemplating a move for the 27-year-old player, who is currently tied to Selhurst Park for another two years.
Contract Details and Competition
Eze’s contract previously contained a £68 million release clause, but that clause expired earlier this month, and Tottenham is now working towards securing his signature for a lesser amount. Meanwhile, Arsenal has shown interest in Eze as well, although their efforts were largely dependent on whether Ethan Nwaneri would enter the last year of his contract without an extension. Nwaneri, however, has since committed to a new five-year deal with the Gunners.
This state leaves Arsenal needing to clear some players before they can intensify their pursuit of Eze, especially after they invested around £200 million during the current transfer window. Their recent decision to enhance Leandro Trossard’s contract terms without extending its duration suggests a potential reduction in their interest in Eze.
Current Status of the Transfer
As it stands, Spurs appear to have taken the lead in the race for Eze, who is now reportedly amenable to joining Tottenham, particularly as the club prepares for this season’s Champions League after clinching the Europa League title in May.
Although discussions are ongoing and no agreement has been finalized, Tottenham has put forth an initial bid of £55 million plus an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons. Eze was on the pitch for 84 minutes during Saturday’s scoreless draw at Chelsea, where a stunning free-kick he scored was disallowed by VAR.
Manager’s Comments
Following the match, Palace manager Oliver Glasner suggested that a transfer was not imminent, as Eze is expected to participate in the upcoming Conference League playoff against Fredrikstad. “He will come in tomorrow for recovery, then we have a day off on Tuesday, and will regroup Wednesday. I anticipate he will be back to play for us,” Glasner informed reporters. He also acknowledged the remaining two weeks of the transfer window, understanding that the final decision lies with the club regarding Eze’s future.
