Toronto Maple Leafs Roster Evaluation
The Toronto Maple Leafs are evaluating their roster options as the NHL season winds down, particularly with the recent addition of some fresh talent from their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Although the team has brought in three Marlies players—Jacob Quillan, Bo Groulx, and Michael Pezzetta—who have gathered varying amounts of playing time in the AHL, it remains uncertain if any will see action in the NHL this season.
Player Performance and Contributions
Quillan has participated in 18 games, Groulx in 12, and Pezzetta in 6, offering a glimpse into their capabilities as the team heads toward the final games of the schedule. In addition to these players, William Villeneuve was called up in an emergency situation due to an injury to Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is dealing with ailments affecting both his upper and lower body. Furthermore, forward Luke Haymes was also recalled on an emergency basis on Tuesday morning.
During what could be one of their last comprehensive practice sessions of the year, Villeneuve practiced alongside Ekman-Larsson while Haymes contributed as a forward option. Both players have made significant contributions to the Marlies this season: Haymes, a rookie center, accumulated 17 goals and 32 points in 63 games, and Villeneuve led the Marlies defensemen with 28 points over 58 games. Despite their successes in the AHL, neither player has yet experienced the NHL.
Future Opportunities and Coach’s Insights
In light of a season that has not gone as planned for the Maple Leafs, giving an opportunity to these younger players could be beneficial for the organization’s assessment of their potential. Villeneuve has been part of the Maple Leafs system since the 2022 season, emphasizing his long-term significance to the franchise.
However, head coach Craig Berube has not confirmed whether the two players will see game time, stating, “I think we’re just dealing with some… situations which could keep guys out. It’s nice to have those guys up here to get acclimated, and if we need them, we’ll use them.” Berube acknowledged the importance of youth gaining NHL experience, mentioning that a few games could be advantageous for young players, but he remained noncommittal about whether Haymes or Villeneuve would play.
As the Maple Leafs prepare for their final five games of the season, fans will be keen to see if either player gets the chance to debut in the NHL before the season concludes.
