Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Search
As the Toronto Maple Leafs search for their next head coach, internal candidates are emerging in the conversation. Reports indicate that assistant coach Derek Lalonde will be interviewed for the position. Lalonde joined Toronto last summer following the departure of associate coach Lane Lambert, who took the reins at the Seattle Kraken.
Coaching Performance
Under Lalonde’s guidance, the team’s penalty kill ranked eighth in the NHL, achieving an 81.2% efficiency rate. However, the overall defensive performance of the Maple Leafs left much to be desired throughout the season, an area for which Lalonde was also responsible.
During a rocky start to last season, many speculated that Lalonde could potentially step in as an interim head coach if the team had chosen to dismiss head coach Craig Berube sooner rather than later. Ultimately, the organization opted to wait until the end of the season, bringing in a new management team led by General Manager John Chayka and Senior Executive Advisor to Hockey Operations Mats Sundin.
Previous Experience
Before joining the Maple Leafs, Lalonde established a solid reputation as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, working under Jon Cooper. His time in Tampa was marked by significant success, including Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021, and a return to the Stanley Cup Final in 2022. Lalonde then took the helm as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings at the start of the 2022-23 season. Despite a commendable record of 41 wins, 32 losses, and 9 overtime losses, the Red Wings just missed the playoffs. Midway through the 2024-25 season, Lalonde was let go and replaced by the experienced Todd McLellan.
Future Prospects
Given Chayka’s commitment to a comprehensive search for Toronto’s next head coach, it is likely that multiple candidates, including Lalonde, will be evaluated thoroughly. The team previously spoke with over 20 individuals as part of their recent hiring process, hinting that this search may take some time.
On a public platform, Lalonde has demonstrated his analytical thinking, notably during his segment on Hockey Night In Canada in 2023. While analyzing the Maple Leafs vs. Lightning playoff series, he discussed an internal study from the Lightning focusing on goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy’s performance in tracking shots from the point.
“We revised our entire defensive zone strategy and improved our pass rush,”
he explained.
With the team’s existing coaching staff’s futures uncertain, it remains to be seen whether Lalonde will remain with the organization in any capacity should a new head coach come aboard. However, his previous experience and insights could make him a valuable asset for the Maple Leafs moving forward.
