Toronto Maple Leafs Draft Pick Sam McCue Sets Sights on NCAA Hockey at Bowling Green

Sam McCue’s Career Transition

Sam McCue, a forward for the Brantford Bulldogs and a prospect of the Toronto Maple Leafs, has made the significant decision to pursue his college hockey career at Bowling Green State University after wrapping up his time in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Currently in his final season of junior eligibility, McCue will likely transition to the NCAA for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Draft and Playing Style

Drafted 216th overall by the Maple Leafs in the 2024 NHL Draft, McCue has been noted for his aggressive style of play and scoring ability, qualities that align well with the new scouting direction of the Leafs under general manager Brad Treliving and director of amateur scouting Mark Leach.

OHL Performance

The Sudbury, Ontario native is navigating his fourth season in the OHL, having experienced a notable career year last season where he netted 36 goals and contributed 55 points over 55 games, while splitting his time between the Owen Sound Attack and the Flint Firebirds. This season, in just seven outings with the Bulldogs, he has already accumulated four points, including two goals and two assists. Initially part of Brantford’s top six forwards, McCue has recently been repositioned to the third line, playing alongside teammates Luca Testa and Layne Gallacher.

Future Prospects

Despite his commitment to Bowling Green, there’s still a chance that McCue could ink an NHL contract with the Maple Leafs this season, potentially leading to a role with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies instead of attending college next year.
