Tony Stewart embraces rivalry with his wife Leah Pruett as she returns to drag racing

Tony Stewart’s Racing Comeback

Tony Stewart, the well-known figure in both NASCAR and drag racing, recently stepped into the spotlight at an interview session, humorously attributing his late arrival to his wife. As a former champion in NASCAR and IndyCar, Stewart has proven his mettle yet again in the NHRA, clinching the Top Fuel regular-season title while temporarily taking over driving duties for his wife, Leah Pruett, at Tony Stewart Racing (TSR).

Leah Pruett’s Return to Racing

After taking a two-year hiatus to focus on family — the couple welcomed their son Dom in November 2024 — Leah Pruett is rejoining the racing scene, reclaiming her seat from Stewart, who enjoyed his time behind the wheel so much that he has now signed with Elite Motorsports, creating the potential for exciting rivalry between the two on the track.

Anticipation for the Season

Matt Hagan, a fellow racer at TSR, expressed his anticipation for how this husband-wife dynamic will unfold throughout the season. He jokingly mentioned he might need popcorn to watch the competition between them during races.

The action is set to kick off at the Gatornationals, the opening event of the season, where the couple could find themselves racing head-to-head in the brackets. After the initial rounds of qualifying, Pruett has secured the No. 3 position on the grid, with Stewart closely behind at No. 5. They will have additional qualifying runs on Saturday to finalize the elimination brackets.

Preparation and Reflection

The preparation for the season has found Stewart, Pruett, and their young son basking in the Florida sun for nearly 40 days. Their time included testing at local drag strips and attending Daytona International Speedway, where Stewart made his first NASCAR appearance since 2016—but not without a crash that left him in last place in the Truck Series.

As Pruett prepares to dive back into racing after a break, she reflects on the familiarity of the competition despite the new environment.

“It’s more renew than new. I need to remind myself that even though everything feels fresh, we’re also returning to what we’ve always known,”

she stated, highlighting her career-best third-place finish last year.

Professionalism on the Track

Stewart has acknowledged the unique challenge of potentially racing against Pruett, admitting they contemplated practicing side-by-side to ease the tension but opted against it. Still, he stressed that the competition will remain professional:

“For me, her being another driver is just like racing anyone else. There’s no additional pressure; I see it as a chance to win.”

Marriage Beyond Racing

Regardless of the competition on the track, Stewart reassured fans and followers that their marriage remains unaffected by the high-stakes racing environment.

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who wins or loses; we will still be married, and that’s something that is set in stone,”

he affirmed, underscoring the strength of their personal relationship against the backdrop of their professional racing ambitions.
