Tony Ferguson’s Boxing Debut
Tony Ferguson is on the verge of making his debut in professional boxing, an opportunity that brings him a unique sense of excitement. While there are multiple factors to consider – such as the thrill of a new challenge, the chance to develop fresh skills, and the allure of competing under bright lights once again – there is one element that stands out above all: the prospect of finally wearing shoes during a fight.
Transition from UFC to Boxing
For years, the ex-UFC star has accustomed himself to competing barefoot in the Octagon and during his training sessions. However, the 41-year-old is eager to step into the ring sporting proper footwear.
“I absolutely despise fighting without shoes,”
Ferguson expressed in an interview with ESPN, reflecting on his frustrations before his boxing match against YouTuber Salt Papi in Manchester, England, set for Friday.
“I have always wrestled in shoes, played football and baseball in cleats; I’ve simply always had something on my feet.”
Yet, having the option to wear boots is just one of the many reasons Ferguson is looking forward to his boxing debut. He has been diligently working towards this moment and feels a renewed sense of purpose.
“I’m excited to step in the ring and handle business. I’ve been putting in the hours, waking up early, running, doing sprints, and hitting strength conditioning. I’m ready to get this job done,”
he emphasized.
Overcoming Challenges
This boxing venture comes after a long wait; Ferguson mentioned that the UFC previously barred him from pursuing a boxing match while still with the promotion. A popular figure in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, it’s clear why the UFC would want to minimize any risks of injury for him. However, Ferguson has always had a penchant for proving skeptics wrong.
“I don’t know why it was different for me. Other fighters were given the opportunity to box, and while I’m not claiming it was favoritism, I’ve always wanted to pursue boxing,”
he stated, expressing his frustration.
“They tried to sideline me, thinking I would age out and not be able to perform. They underestimated me.”
Inspiration for Future Generations
Stepping into the ring may not just be for Ferguson himself; he aims to set an example for his two sons, Armand and Angel. He understands that many children lack role models, something he faced growing up, where icons like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger inspired him.
“It’s difficult for kids to find that kind of figure today. I want to be that person who they can look up to and think, ‘wow, that’s a man who knows his purpose,'”
he remarked as he prepares for this significant moment in his career.
