Timberwolves Initiate Discussion with Grizzlies on Ja Morant; Deal Still Far Off

Minnesota Timberwolves Seek Point Guard Solution

The Minnesota Timberwolves are actively seeking a solution to their point guard predicament as they aim for a deeper playoff run and potential appearance in the NBA Finals. Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies has recently expressed dissatisfaction with his role in Memphis, prompting speculation about a possible trade.

Trade Discussions for Ja Morant

According to Jon Krawczynski from The Athletic, during a segment on SiriusXM NBA Radio, the Timberwolves have reached out to the Grizzlies to gauge the feasibility of acquiring Morant. However, Krawczynski stated that negotiations are still in very early stages with no imminent deal in sight, suggesting that any serious discussions may evolve as the trade deadline approaches.

Krawczynski highlighted that currently, the Timberwolves lack a traditional point guard. The team is relying on Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle to fulfill playmaking roles, which is not ideal for their strategies. He noted, “They’re asking Anthony Edwards to do it. They’re asking Julius Randle to do a lot of point forward stuff.”

He confirmed that Minnesota has indeed shown interest in Morant to assess their options, saying, “They’re testing the waters a little bit. I don’t get the sense that there’s anything real close. If we get to late December and the Wolves are still treading water… I do think they could explore at least looking harder at Ja Morant.”

Morant’s Trade Market and Memphis’ Considerations

Previous reports have indicated that the Timberwolves are not new contenders for Morant’s services in the league. Nevertheless, sources from NBC Sports assert that Morant’s trade market isn’t particularly robust, falling short of what the Grizzlies may demand, especially considering his significant impact as a star player in a smaller market.

For Memphis, trading Morant would not only disrupt their current lineup but also raise questions about trading other key players, like Jaren Jackson Jr., who might draw strong interest from various teams. If Memphis opts to enter trade discussions for Morant, they are likely to seek either another star player in return or an extensive package of draft picks and young talent to reignite their rebuilding efforts.

Concerns About Fit and Future Prospects

Despite Minnesota’s ranking as the fourth-highest offensive team in the league this season, concerns persist about their defensive performance, which has seen a significant decline from last year’s top-10 ranking. This raises questions about whether a player like Morant—known for his ball-dominant play style—would be the right fit for the Timberwolves, who might benefit more from a traditional floor general.

If a trade is to materialize, it is expected to happen after the new year, closer to the February trade deadline, but the more probable scenario could unfold during the next offseason, allowing the Timberwolves to reassess their needs and roster alignment.
