Three finalists announced for the Lady Byng Trophy: Kopitar, Caufield, and Sanderson

Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Finalists Announced

The prestigious Lady Byng Memorial Trophy recognizes the most sportsmanlike player in the NHL, and this year, the finalists have been announced. Anze Kopitar, who recently concluded his storied career with the Los Angeles Kings, tops the list alongside Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens and Jake Sanderson from the Ottawa Senators.

Anze Kopitar

Kopitar, the award’s reigning champion and a three-time winner, played his final game this past Sunday, where the Kings suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche during the Western Conference playoffs. At 38 years old, the long-time captain had an impressive last season, registering 12 goals and a total of 38 points over 67 games, while maintaining an average ice time of 19:07 and accumulating only 10 penalty minutes.

His latest nomination marks the tenth occasion he has been recognized among the top ten in the Byng voting. Should he win, Kopitar would also become the first player to secure the award in consecutive years since Martin St. Louis achieved this feat in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons. He aims to join an elite group of four-time Byng winners that includes legends such as Wayne Gretzky and Pavel Datsyuk.

Cole Caufield

Caufield, a 25-year-old right winger, enjoyed a breakout year as he became the first Canadiens player in 36 years to net 50 goals in a single season, finishing with 51 goals and a total of 88 points in 81 games. His performance was bolstered by an average ice time of 18:11, while exhibiting commendable discipline with only 14 penalty minutes. This nomination marks Caufield’s inaugural appearance as a Lady Byng finalist.

Jake Sanderson

Sanderson, the young defenseman with the Senators, also received recognition for his sportsmanship, accumulating just eight penalty minutes during the season. In 67 games, the 23-year-old notched 14 goals and 45 assists while averaging 24:50 in ice time. This marks his first time as a finalist after finishing 33rd in the voting last season and rising to 10th place after the 2024-25 season.

Voting Process

Voting for the Lady Byng Trophy was conducted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, with ballots cast at the conclusion of the regular season. The top three players in the voting were selected as finalists for this esteemed honor.
