NHL Players in Transition
As August approaches in the 2025 calendar, NHL players find themselves in a transitional period, balancing time with loved ones before the commencement of the 2025-26 season and relocation to their hockey teams. For three ex-players of the New Jersey Devils, however, this month brings uncertainty as they search for new opportunities in the professional hockey landscape.
Free Agency Challenges
Nathan Bastian is among those navigating free agency for the very first time. At 27, he boasts a significant track record, having played 276 games in the NHL, with 264 of those as part of the Devils. Following the season, during a media session, Bastian expressed a strong desire to continue his journey in New Jersey.
“It’s amazing how quickly a place can feel like home,” he shared. “Although it’s not been short, I believe I’ve held the title of longest-standing Devil since my draft. The connection to the city, the arena, and the team staff is meaningful to me, and I hope to continue being part of it.”
Nevertheless, the prospect of resigning has diminished, as confirmed by team general manager Tom Fitzgerald, who stated on July 2 that there are no plans to re-sign further unrestricted free agents beyond Jake Allen and Dennis Cholowski.
Kevin Rooney, who initially started his journey with the Devils, has also become a free agent after his time with the Calgary Flames. The 32-year-old forward had a standout season where he achieved a personal milestone, participating in 70 games and accumulating 10 points, comprising five goals and five assists.
Lastly, Jimmy Vesey, a seasoned player at 32, began the 2024-25 season with the New York Rangers before transitioning to the Colorado Avalanche in a trade that involved multiple players and draft picks. Though he didn’t see ice time in the playoffs, Vesey concluded the season with eight points over 43 games and entered free agency on July 1. Known as a bit of a hockey nomad, he has represented six teams since entering the NHL in 2016.
