Thomas Chabot’s Early Return to Practice Offers Hope for Ottawa Senators

Ottawa Senators Face Injury Challenges

In recent weeks, the Ottawa Senators have faced a wave of misfortune with injuries, impacting their push for NHL playoff contention. Throughout this challenging period, the team has been forced to rotate through 12 different defensemen. However, there are signs of optimism as key players begin to return to the lineup.

Key Player Returns

One significant boost for the Senators came last week with the return of their top defenseman, Jake Sanderson. On Tuesday, adding to this positive news, Thomas Chabot participated in the morning skate with the team prior to a crucial matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Canadian Tire Centre. Chabot, who underwent surgery after sustaining a cross-check to the forearm from J.T. Miller of the New York Rangers on March 23, was originally expected to miss between four to eight weeks. His presence on the ice just two weeks post-surgery is a surprising and encouraging sign.

“Seeing him on the ice is great news,” said head coach Travis Green. “Whenever a player rejoins the morning skate, it indicates they are not far from making a full return, and we hope it’s sooner rather than later.”

When asked about the timeline for Chabot, Green hinted that it could indeed be quicker than initially anticipated.

Chabot’s Resilience

Known more for his finesse than his physicality, Chabot nonetheless demonstrates remarkable resilience, a quality that has impressed his coach. Green stated,

“He’s one of the toughest players I’ve coached or played with in terms of playing through injuries. It’s quite impressive, to be honest.”

Chabot has a history of battling through wrist injuries for more than two seasons before opting for surgery.

Additional Updates

In addition, defenseman Dennis Gilbert, who would bolster the team’s defensive depth, returned to practice on Monday, indicating he is also nearing a return. However, specifics about Gilbert’s status were not addressed by Green during his comments.

Another player to monitor is Tim Stutzle, who appeared to be in discomfort following a left shoulder issue during the last game.

Playoff Position

As the regular season winds down with only five games left, the Senators are narrowly holding on to the final wild-card playoff position in the Eastern Conference, standing at 90 points and just one point ahead of the New York Islanders. Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets are also in close pursuit, just two points behind Ottawa.
