Injury Update: Thomas Chabot
During a matchup against the Dallas Stars at the Canadian Tire Centre, the Ottawa Senators faced a setback when defenseman Thomas Chabot sustained an upper-body injury. The incident occurred late in the first period following a heavy check by Colin Blackwell, a forward for the Stars. The collision, which took place near the benches where the protective glass is absent, appeared to impact Chabot’s lower back or left rib area as he collided with the unforgiving edge of the boards.
Chabot’s Attempt to Return
Chabot made an attempt to participate in the second period by taking part in the warm-up skate but ultimately left the ice and did not return for the remainder of the game. As of now, the extent of his injury remains uncertain. This news is especially concerning for the Senators, as their left-handed defense options are already stretched thin.
Defensive Depth Concerns
Donovan Sebrango, who was poised to step up this season, was claimed off waivers by the Florida Panthers after the Senators attempted to assign him to their minor league affiliate last month. Sebrango has since contributed two assists in his recent games with the Panthers.
Among the players in Belleville who could fill the gap left by Chabot are Jorian Donovan, Tomas Hamara, and Matthew Andonovski; however, none of them possess NHL experience. The lone exception is Scott Harrington, a former defenseman for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who is under an AHL contract with Belleville. Harrington has a background of 255 NHL games, primarily with the Blue Jackets, but has not played in the NHL since the 2022–23 season.
Looking Ahead
Given the current situation, it is anticipated that Nikolas Matinpalo could re-enter the Senators’ lineup, with Jordan Spence potentially shifting to the left defense position. At this point, there may be an increased urgency for General Manager Steve Staios to explore the trade market for additional defensive help.
Chabot’s Contribution
Chabot, who has been a significant contributor this season with 10 points over 16 games played, will likely have his status updated soon. Head coach Travis Green is expected to provide more information following the team’s next game. This uncertainty continues to raise questions about the team’s defensive depth at a critical juncture in the season.
