Texas Rangers Sign Veteran Outfielder Andrew McCutchen to Minor League Deal, Sources Say

Texas Rangers Reach Agreement with Andrew McCutchen

In a recent development, the Texas Rangers have reached a preliminary agreement with Andrew McCutchen, the seasoned outfielder, for a minor league contract. This information comes from a source familiar with the situation who requested anonymity pending the completion of the deal and a mandatory physical exam. If McCutchen, who is 39 years old, secures a position on the major league roster, he is set to earn $1.5 million for the current season.

Outfield Lineup and McCutchen’s Role

The Rangers find themselves in a favorable position with their outfield lineup, featuring emerging talents such as Wyatt Langford in left field, Evan Carter in center, and newcomer Brandon Nimmo taking his place in right. However, Carter’s limited participation in only 63 games last season due to injuries highlights the need for additional depth in the outfield—an area McCutchen could potentially reinforce. Furthermore, with left-handed hitter Joc Pederson projected to share the designated hitter responsibilities, McCutchen’s right-handed batting could prove advantageous.

McCutchen’s Career Highlights

Historically, McCutchen has made significant contributions to Major League Baseball (MLB), having been first drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2005 before making his major league debut in 2009. The majority of McCutchen’s career was spent with the Pirates, during which he garnered five consecutive All-Star selections and earned the National League MVP title in 2013, establishing himself as a beloved figure in the team’s history. After a series of signings with four other franchises from 2018 to 2022, he returned to the Pirates, playing 135 games last season with a respectable showing—13 home runs, 57 RBIs, and a .700 OPS.

Future Prospects

Prior to the Rangers’ interest, the Pirates’ general manager, Ben Cherington, indicated last month that McCutchen might still be welcomed back to Pittsburgh. However, the recent acquisition of veteran Marcell Ozuna by the Pirates has likely closed the door on that prospect. Cherington expressed a desire to maintain a strong relationship with McCutchen moving forward regardless of his current team affiliation.
