Tensions Rise: Jeanie Buss Reports Frustration with LeBron James Following Lakers’ Draft of Bronny James

The Lakers and LeBron James: A Shifting Relationship

The Los Angeles Lakers made headlines in 2018 when they acquired LeBron James, a decision that initially revived the team’s fortunes as he led them to an NBA Championship in his second season. However, recent reports indicate that the relationship between Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and James has deteriorated over time.

Internal Dynamics and Trade Decisions

According to ESPN’s Baxter Holmes, this shift in perspective was detailed in a broader narrative about internal family dynamics within the Buss family and the eventual sale of the franchise to Mark Walter.

Buss’s dissatisfaction is believed to have started following the Lakers’ ill-fated trade for Russell Westbrook in 2021, a move intended to appease James. The integration of Westbrook did not go as planned, ultimately resulting in the Lakers missing the playoffs. In the aftermath, Buss reportedly grew frustrated with James, especially due to his tendency to deflect blame to others regarding the failed acquisition.

Contemplating a Trade

At one stage, Buss contemplated the possibility of trading James, potentially to the Los Angeles Clippers. However, those plans were never executed, and with James signing a contract extension in 2024 that includes a no-trade clause, moving him now would require his consent.

Drafting Bronny James

The relationship further deteriorated after the Lakers selected Bronny James, LeBron’s son, with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Reports suggest that Buss expected LeBron to show appreciation for the team’s decision to draft his son; however, she felt he did not express that gratitude. Bronny has played a limited role in the NBA thus far, averaging just 1.9 points over 51 games.

Looking Ahead

As the 2023-24 season progresses, it seems that Buss and James could be headed for an offseason separation. With James’s contract expiring soon and the Lakers off to a commendable 26-16 start this year, he remains a valuable asset and could secure a position with another team if he chooses. Yet, LeBron has not clarified his intentions regarding his NBA future beyond the 2025-26 season.

Should James decide to return for another year, it is uncertain if his relationship with Buss will allow for a continuation with the Lakers in the coming years, especially in light of recent tensions.
