Tara Moore’s Doping Suspension
In a significant development in the realm of sports, Tara Moore, a 32-year-old British tennis player, has received a four-year suspension due to a doping violation, despite having been previously exonerated by an independent tribunal. This ruling stems from a positive test result for anabolic steroids, specifically boldenone and nandrolone, which Moore recorded in April 2022 during a tournament in Colombia.
Independent Tribunal and CAS Appeal
After her provisional suspension, which began following the testing, an independent body found in December 2023 that Moore was not at fault. However, this decision was contested by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), leading to an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). On Tuesday, CAS announced that it had overturned the tribunal’s initial ruling in favor of the ITIA’s appeal. Consequently, Moore’s four-year ban from tennis was confirmed, although it will account for the time she has already spent under provisional suspension, meaning she is prohibited from competing until the 2028 tennis season begins.
ITIA’s Position and CAS Findings
Karen Moorhouse, the CEO of the ITIA, emphasized that each case is meticulously assessed based on its unique circumstances and affirmed that their decision to appeal indicated the case’s complexity. In their findings, the CAS panel determined that Moore did not convincingly demonstrate that the nandrolone levels found in her sample were due to consuming contaminated beef or pork during her time in Colombia. They ruled that she failed to prove that her anti-doping rule violation (ADRV) was unintentional, thereby dismissing her counter-appeal as inadmissible.

This ruling comes at a time when doping scandals have become increasingly controversial in the sport, following the recent positive tests of other high-profile players, including current men’s world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and four-time French Open champion Iga Świątek, both of whom managed to claim titles at Wimbledon just days ago. Moore, who had once held the title of Britain’s top doubles player, now faces a lengthy absence from competitive play as she grapples with the repercussions of this ruling.
