Temwa Chawinga Makes History with Second Consecutive NWSL MVP Award

Historic Achievement in NWSL

In a historic moment for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga has made headlines by clinching the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for two consecutive years. This significant achievement was announced during the league’s inaugural awards ceremony held at the San Jose Civic Center, marking a milestone in the NWSL’s 12-year history.

Chawinga’s Remarkable Performance

Chawinga’s remarkable performance this past season saw her net 15 goals, solidifying her position as the league’s leading scorer for the second year in a row with a Golden Boot win. Last season, she broke records by scoring 20 times, the highest in a single season. Her consistency places her alongside Sam Kerr, who also won the MVP title twice (in 2017 and 2019), highlighting the elite company Chawinga now shares.

Coaching and Other Awards

In addition to Chawinga’s accolades, the NWSL recognized outstanding coaching leadership with the Coach of the Year award, which was presented to Bev Yanez of Racing Louisville. Under her guidance, the team achieved its best results to date by reaching the playoffs, and she made history as the first coach in the league to have previously played as an NWSL athlete.

Furthermore, the Current also celebrated success with Lorena being named the Goalkeeper of the Year. Tara McKeown of Washington Spirit took home the Defender of the Year award, while Manaka Matsukubo from North Carolina Courage was recognized as the top midfielder, adding to the list of impressive individual performances this season.
