Taylor Fritz Advances to Wimbledon Quarterfinals as Jordan Thompson Retires Due to Injury

Taylor Fritz Advances to Wimbledon Quarterfinals

American tennis player Taylor Fritz secured his spot in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second year in a row after his opponent, Jordan Thompson, was forced to withdraw due to injury. At the time of the retirement, Fritz was comfortably leading the match 6-1, 3-0.

With this achievement, Fritz continues a notable trend, marking the fifth consecutive major tournament in which at least one male American athlete has reached the quarterfinals. This represents the longest such streak for U.S. men since they experienced a stretch of six straight appearances from the 2002 US Open to the 2004 Australian Open.

Fritz’s Reflections on the Match

Following the match, Fritz expressed disappointment about not finishing the game as intended, stating, “Not the way I wanted to go through, I was excited to play Jordan today, I was excited to play good tennis. It’s sad … he’s been battling out here, playing five-setters. I respect him for coming out … I feel bad for him and I hope he gets better.”

Fritz’s advancement comes alongside fellow American Ben Shelton, who made it to the round of 16 with a straight-sets victory in his previous match. However, U.S. representation in the men’s singles draw is notably slim at this stage, as only these two players remain. Historically, the path to the semifinals at Wimbledon has been a challenge for American men, with only Sam Querrey in 2017 and John Isner in 2018 achieving this feat in the last 15 years.

Upcoming Quarterfinals

In the upcoming quarterfinals, Fritz will face the 17th seed, Karen Khachanov, who secured his place by defeating Kamil Majchrzak with a convincing score of 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Khachanov demonstrated strong form during his match, ending with significantly more winners (44) than unforced errors (21), and remarked, “To be honest, today was a really great performance — at least from my side.”

The Russian player has previously reached the semifinals in two Grand Slam tournaments, including the U.S. Open in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2023. Khachanov has also qualified for the quarterfinals at Wimbledon previously, four years ago. Majchrzak, ranked 109th, experienced his first fourth-round match appearance at a Grand Slam event, having been on a six-match losing streak prior to his participation at Wimbledon.

Other Matches in the Tournament

Later matches in the tournament include defending champion Carlos Alcaraz taking on No. 14 seed Andrey Rublev, as well as Nicolas Jarry competing against Cam Norrie.
