Tarleton State University ends coaching relationship with Billy Gillispie

Tarleton State University Parts Ways with Head Coach Billy Gillispie

Tarleton State University will be parting ways with head basketball coach Billy Gillispie, as reported on February 27. The 66-year-old has been at the helm since 2020, achieving a record of 78 wins to 74 losses across five seasons.

Health Challenges and Coaching History

Gillispie’s tenure has been marred by significant health challenges; he has been unable to coach since mid-January due to ongoing health issues that have affected him for several years. Previously a head coach at notable programs such as Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Texas Tech, Gillispie has faced serious health obstacles, including a kidney failure diagnosis in 2017 that necessitated a transplant. His health complications persisted, leading him to miss the entire 2023-24 season at Tarleton State after a procedure related to high blood pressure.

Allegations and Interim Coaching

In addition to health-related concerns, Gillispie’s time at various institutions has also been shadowed by allegations regarding his treatment of players. Most recently, he was placed on temporary administrative leave on October 3, 2025, after an anonymous complaint was made to the school.

In the wake of his absence, associate head coach Glynn Cyprien has stepped in as the interim head coach for the Texans, who currently hold a record of 14-15 for the season.

Coaching Achievements

Gillispie’s resume includes leading UTEP to an NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2003-04 season and guiding Texas A&M to the Sweet 16 in 2007 before a brief and tumultuous stint at Kentucky, where he was dismissed after two seasons without NCAA Tournament success.
