Syracuse University Moves On from Head Coach Adrian Autry
In the wake of a disappointing season that concluded on March 10, Syracuse University has decided to move on from head coach Adrian Autry. The decision comes after the Orange faced a tough defeat against SMU, resulting in an 86-69 loss during the opening round of the ACC tournament. With this loss, Syracuse wrapped up its season with a record of 15 wins and 17 losses, marking a challenging transition period for the program following the legendary Jim Boeheim’s retirement.
Adrian Autry’s Tenure
Adrian Autry, who had previous ties to Syracuse as a point guard and later as an assistant coach under Boeheim from 2011 until 2023, ends his three-year stint with a closely contested record of 49 wins and 48 losses, but unfortunately, he did not lead the team to the NCAA Tournament. Acknowledging his struggles, Autry stated in a postgame press conference that he held himself accountable for the team’s performance.
“I don’t shy away from the job that I did. I’m harder on myself than anybody. I didn’t get the results that we wanted,”
he expressed after the team’s season finale.
Season Overview
The season started with promise, as Syracuse held a 12-5 record in January, but a downward spiral saw the team lose 14 out of its last 17 contests. Autry’s tenure saw the addition of promising talents, such as Kiyan Anthony, the son of Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony. However, Kiyan struggled to make a significant impact, averaging only 8 points per game with a shooting percentage of 39.9%.
Looking Ahead
As Syracuse searches for a new leader to help restore the team’s competitive edge, names such as Gerry McNamara, who recently took Siena to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade, are emerging as potential candidates. Other notable figures in the coaching landscape like Bryan Hodgson from USF and Josh Schertz from Saint Louis are also being considered. The upcoming coach will face the substantial task of revitalizing a program that has faced challenges in recent years and is eager to reclaim its former glory.
